KS1 Visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Our KS1 visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park gave the children a fantastic opportunity to explore sculpture in a lively, hands-on way. Working in small groups, they experimented with found materials, both natural and man-made, to create their own large-scale sculptural constructions outdoors.

Using their newly defined criteria for success, they thought carefully about balance, scale, composition and light as they built. The session encouraged imaginative thinking and helped the children develop important construction skills such as stacking and balancing. It also supported problem-solving, teamwork, speaking and listening, and physical engagement with large-scale making.

Each group created their own ‘mini’ Yorkshire Sculpture Park and proudly presented their ideas to the class. Together, we reflected on the sculptures and talked about the different challenges of sculptural making. Throughout the workshop, the children expanded their sculptural vocabulary and deepened their understanding of how artists work with space, materials and structure.
