Years 1 & 2

Leaving Reception behind and moving into Year 1 can feel like a big step for both children and their parents. Mrs Bullman, Ms Mitchell and Mrs Young are there to make this transition easier for everyone by supporting the children (and their parents!) in their next learning step. We make the transition into Year 1 as smooth as possible, ensuring the children still have plenty of opportunity for free play and hands-on learning experiences. The school day may be a little more structured than it was in Reception and the children will get used to sitting at a table for a little longer than they are used to, but they will still also be learning in a variety of ways; while moving, exploring outdoors, in groups, on the carpet or walking around the school!

In Year 2 the children have already grown used to their classroom environment, their teachers and the daily expectations across the curriculum. The children would have gained a great deal of independence and are able to take more responsibility for themselves and their belongings.

What do we learn in Year 1/2?

Year 1 carry out the Phonics Screening Check. This is a national check and is nothing to worry about as your child has been learning phonics all year; they are well-practiced having experienced the format through regular half-termly assessment.

Year 2 is the last year of Key Stage 1. There is a continued focus on phonics, while in maths your child will be introduced to fractions.
