BrightSparks Workshop

On Monday 23rd June, the pupils in Year 5/6 took part in a workshop run by BrightSparks.

The objective of this workshop was to help children become more aware of the infrastructure around them and understand the role of companies like Amey in their daily lives.

Key questions:

  • Have you ever noticed these things before?

  • Why do you think they are important?

  • Who do you think is responsible for maintaining them?

The pupils were tasked with "Designing the sustainable city of the future!"

Pupils worked in pairs or small groups and were asked to draw a blueprint of their own city, including key infrastructure elements such as roads, buildings, parks, and EV charging stations. They were also tasked to think carefully about sustainability features, such as:

  • Green Spaces: Parks, community gardens, and green roofs.

  • Renewable Energy Sources: Solar panels, wind turbines, and hydroelectric plants.

  • Electric Vehicle Infrastructure: EV charging stations and electric public transport.

  • Waste Management: Recycling centres and composting facilities.

  • Water Conservation: Rainwater harvesting systems and water-efficient landscaping.

The workshop concluded with each group to presenting their city to the class. They had to explain the sustainable features they included and why they thought these features were important.
