British Science Week 2021

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths which takes place every year in March. The 2021 theme was 'Innovating for the future'. Our children, throughout the Key Stages, loved creative problem-solving and learning about inspirational innovators. Check out their incredible innovations below.

EYFS - Frozen Garden: The children looked at how water turns to ice and the effect it has on leaves and sticks. They thought the leaves would turn brown because it was cold…….but they remained green.

KS1 - Design a Bug: As part of Science / STEM/ DT week, the class have researched, designed and constructed their very own insects.

Year 3/4 - Wearable Technology: The children looked at famous inventors and also futuristic inventions such as wearable technology. We found out that wearable technology is used in sport, to improve performance. Also for medical reasons to help people with mobility or aid movement and also in the armed forces with animals.

Year 5/6 - Periscope Design: The children looked at the common periscope and how it used in the submarines to see what is going on the water surface. It was also used for observation purposes in the trenches during World War I and is used in some gun turrets and it is used in armed vehicles. We looked at whether we could improve the design or think about different uses. Could we design a periscope that uses more than two mirrors?

We all tried to make innovations,

by adapting another’s creations,

there was no hope,

for a nice periscope,

but there were some wacky inventions!
