Year 5/6 Science (Light)

In Year 5/6 the children have been investigating the following:

  • recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines

  • use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye

  • explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes

  • use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.

They carried out an investigation to determine whether light travels in a straight line by arranging three pieces of card, with holes in them, into an uneven line. The light stops and cannot travel through all three cards. When they arranged the cards so that the the holes were in a straight line, the light was able to travel through.
