Ice Bear Hunt - Eco Council

Ice Bear Hunt

The Eco-councillors put on an event in Hebden Bridge called the Ice Bear Hunt.  There were 12 ice sculptures hidden in the town on Saturday 16th March and children who took part had to find them before the Polar Bears melted.  Children and parents were given a map and a quiz designed by the children to help them on their way!

The sculptures were in part made by the Eco-councillors at Sand In Your Eye’s HQ.  They were in a freezer, which is -10, while they busily carved the polar bears using chisels and saws. They had to make sure they were wearing the right clothes: hats, scarves, gloves and winter coats were the order of the day!

Polar Bear Challenge

Two of our children were tasked with finding out what can be done to help the polar bears.  They did a fantastic job, and we wanted to challenge everyone else to do the same.  These ideas/facts were printed and displayed next to each ice sculpture so that the children were able to inform and involve on how we can help polar bears by being mindful of our actions in light of climate change.

On the day, we collected donations and managed to raise £98, this was used by the school to adopt a polar bear from WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).

The Eco-councillors led a whole school, assembly to inform the school community about the project; from the craving of the ice sculptures to risk assessing the local area to ensure the sculptures were placed appropriately around town.
