This half term we are working on:

  • English - 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers, 'Penguin Pete' by Marcus Pfister, other stories related to our topic of hot and cold places.
  • Phonics - Year 1 Phonics Screening Check during the week beginning 11th June.
  • Maths - KS1 - Position and Direction, Time.
  • Year 1 - Fractions, Place Value to 100.
    Year 2 - Measuring mass, capacity, temperature.
  • Geography - 7 continents/5 oceans.  Human and physical features.  Hot and cold areas of the world.  Using atlases and globes, routes on a map, aerial photos of landmarks.

These KS1 children have been learning to play an instrument this year at school.

Their teacher helped them to give a little performance to their class friends.

We were all impressed!


Julian Brooks worked with KS1 where they were encouraged to become experimental music composers. It was fascinating to watch Julian and the children listen to sounds from nature and then compose their own score. You MUST visit the Arts Festival's 8 experimental music live performances on Sunday 1st July. The performances are spread out through Hebden Bridge throughout the day with KS1 joining in with 'Toy Music'.


We had a fantastic time at Blackpool this week.  The Sea Life Centre was very interesting where we were able to get up close to many sea creatures.  Afterwards the weather was fine so a walk over to the beach was possible.  All the children were interested in was digging!  Digging with their bare hands until they reached water.  So many deep holes! I think they thought if they dug deeper and deeper they would reach the South Pole! Amazing fun on the beach - it was a pleasure to view it.  

The children were all exceptionally well behaved and all children and staff had a brilliant day.



Year 1 are learning about multiplication.  They can put objects in equal groups, can add these equal groups by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  They also understand how to draw an array in perfect rows and columns.

We know when we see him, a simple maths answer is not enough.  We have to prove it and explain how we answered it.

Here are Year 1 answering a capacity and volume question with APE watching. They think they have the answer but can also prove it by showing how to do it with equipment, while explaining as they do it.

What a fantastic trip we had to the Runway Visitor Park at Manchester Airport!

We were able to see Concorde in a hangar and walk underneath it while finding out some amazing facts.  We watched the aeroplanes taking off and landing right next to us.  We learnt about the jobs people did at the airport and on planes.  Sitting in the flight deck and operating the buttons and levers as pilot and co-pilot was the best experience.

KS1 have written about Concorde and there is a display outside the classroom and on the stairs of their amazing writing.  Pop in to see it.


Look at how much money KS1 children have!

We have spent time in Maths discovering how much each coin and note is worth.  We have counted in 2s, 5s and 10s using the coins.  Let your child count a pile of 2 pence pieces in 2s.

Year 2 have found different ways of making the same amount using the £ and p signs.  They have counted coins and notes to find the total being very careful not to use the decimal yet and instead to say they have £1 and 56p.

The next step is to spend their money in our shape shop.  Year 1 will recognise which coins they need and Year 2 will work on adding and subtracting money and giving change.



Children chose seven or eight 3D shapes from our huge selection of shapes in the classroom.  They enjoyed making something with their 3D shapes and were able to talk about them clearly by describing the names of the shapes they used. 

Year 2 were able to explain the names of their shapes, the number of faces and number of vertices.  They were very skillful in comparing the shapes that other children had used.



KS1 are very excited to be doing their Nativity Whoops-a-Davey Angel.  They are rehearsing hard and love their costumes. 

We hope you will be able to come and see it. Parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, friends.  All are very welcome.

Your child has taken part in a session aimed at encouraging them to use a child seat and seat belt whilst travelling in a car.

Your child has been given a "Teddy takes a tumble" book, which we hope you will take the time to read with your child at home. There is also a booklet giving advice for parents on seat belts, child restraints and the law.

If children learn to wear a seat belt from an early age, they will probably remain seat belt wearers for the rest of their lives, even when they are travelling without you.

I'm sure you will agree that this is a valuable skill to learn.

We have started working with our book "I want my hat back".  We've only read a few pages so far but have enjoyed drama activities based on the story.  Ask your child about it.
